Civic engagement can be conducted through participation in the political process, volunteering to help your community, and advocating for an improved quality of life. Being civically engaged enables disenfranchised communities to participate in the creation of solutions to alter the future of their environment. The lack of voice of a community is the most impactful determinant of health.

Hartford Health Initiative is creating awareness about steps residents can take to stay involved in the democratic process and contribute to the development of their neighborhood. Elected officials represent your community, advocating for policies and resources to improve quality of life. If you have concerns that have not been addressed by a specific City department or you have a community wide concern or suggestion, reach out to your local, state, and federal officials. Commissions. You could be a participant by becoming an official member or attending one of their public meetings to help guide their priorities in specific issue areas. These bodies advise the Mayor, City Council, and other elected officials on policies and resource allocation among other things.
EDUCATIONAL CONCERNS
If you have school-related concerns, you can raise the issue at your school’s parent-teacher meetings, your school’s Governance Council meetings, and your city’s Board of Education meetings that offer opportunities for the public to voice concerns.
